What should you know about persistent laryngitis?

Short answer
Persistent laryngitis means voice-box irritation or inflammation has continued beyond the usual short illness, so ongoing hoarseness should be assessed for its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main symptom
- A hoarse, weak, breathy or altered voice
- Helpful details
- Voice use, irritants, reflux symptoms, swallowing and breathing changes
What it can mean
Laryngitis affects the vocal folds, which normally vibrate to produce sound. Swelling can make the voice hoarse, breathy, weak or lower than usual. A common cold can trigger short-lived inflammation, while voice overuse, smoke, dry air or acid reflux may keep irritating the throat. A sore throat, cough or repeated throat clearing can occur alongside the voice change. Persistent hoarseness does not identify one cause by itself, and the pattern of symptoms matters.
Tell a clinician whether the change is constant or intermittent, whether swallowing is painful, and whether you use your voice heavily or have reflux symptoms. Mention smoking or vaping and any inhaled medicines, because these details affect the assessment.
What you can do
Rest your voice without whispering, drink water regularly, and use humidified air if the room is dry. Avoid shouting, repeated throat clearing, smoke and other irritants. If reflux seems to worsen symptoms, note the foods, late meals or lying down that precede it and discuss a suitable plan. Do not use antibiotics simply because your voice is hoarse; they do not treat every cause. A GP consultation can decide whether your throat and voice need further examination.
When to seek care
Book a medical appointment for hoarseness that persists, returns frequently or interferes with work, eating or communication. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, coughing blood or severe dehydration. A voice change with unexplained weight loss, a neck lump or persistent pain also warrants prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be irritating your vocal folds, whether reflux or a recent infection fits the pattern, how long voice rest should continue, and whether an ear, nose and throat assessment is needed. Ask which warning changes should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Can you whisper with laryngitis?
Whispering can strain the voice; gentle, limited speech is usually kinder than forcing a whisper.
Does reflux cause persistent laryngitis?
Acid reflux can irritate the throat and vocal folds in some people, but persistent hoarseness still needs assessment for other causes.
