What should you know about permanent treatment for open pores?

Pores are openings around hair follicles and oil glands. They may look larger when oil and dead skin collect at the opening, after acne, or when sun-damaged skin loses some elasticity. Lighting, makeup, and dehydration can also change how visible they appear. Their appearance is not a sign that the skin is dirty, so forceful squeezing and rough scrubs can make texture and redness worse.

Use a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. A dermatologist may recommend topical retinoids to improve cell turnover and help prevent blocked pores, with a gradual start to limit irritation. Microneedling can be considered for uneven texture after an assessment. If acne is active, treating the acne comes first; otherwise new inflammation may continue to enlarge the look of the pores.

Book a review if enlarged-looking pores appear with persistent acne, painful bumps, scarring, marked redness, or sudden texture change. Ask for guidance before using a retinoid if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or have very reactive skin. Stop a product that causes swelling, blistering, or intense burning and seek medical advice.
