Perioral Folliculitis

The area around the mouth may develop small red or tender bumps, pustules, crusting or itch. Friction, shaving, hair removal, occlusive products and microbes can all contribute. Similar-looking eruptions include acne, ingrown hairs and perioral dermatitis, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Clean the skin gently, avoid squeezing, and pause shaving or hair removal over active bumps. Use a clean towel and avoid sharing face cloths or razors. Do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid cream without advice. A clinician may recommend a topical antibiotic for selected cases, or antibiotic therapy for a suspected skin infection; other causes need different treatment.

Arrange a review when bumps persist, recur after hair removal, or spread beyond the mouth. Seek prompt care if redness is rapidly expanding, the skin is hot and painful, pus is increasing, or you develop fever or facial swelling. Eye involvement also warrants timely assessment.

Ask whether the bumps involve hair follicles, whether a swab is needed, which hair-removal method is safest during healing, and how to use any prescribed topical or oral medicine.
