Perioral dermatitis inside the nose: what to know

The rash often sits beside the nose or around the nostril openings rather than deep inside the nasal passage. It may resemble acne, with clusters of tiny bumps and a dry or tight feeling. The area can sting when washed or exposed to fragranced products. A clinician may also consider contact irritation, infection, eczema, or another nasal problem, especially when symptoms are inside the nose.

Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser on the surrounding skin. Avoid scrubbing, picking, heavy ointments, and new cosmetics until the area settles. Do not put steroid cream or an antibiotic product inside the nose unless a clinician specifically tells you to; the correct product and location matter. Arrange medical review for persistent crusting, bleeding, worsening pain, pus, repeated sores, or symptoms that extend into the nasal passage.
