Perioral Dermatitis Around the Eyes

Perioral dermatitis can cause dry, scaly, itchy, or burning skin around the mouth and may involve the nose or eyelid margins. Irritation on the eyelid is not the same as inflammation inside the eye. Because eyelid skin is thin and easily irritated, products used there can cause swelling or make the diagnosis less clear.

Do not put acne creams, steroid creams, antibiotics, essential oils, or cosmetic products on the eyelid unless a clinician has prescribed them for that exact area. Clean gently, avoid rubbing, remove eye makeup, and pause contact lenses if they feel uncomfortable. A dermatologist or eye clinician can choose a treatment that is appropriate near the eye; oral or topical medicine may be considered after examination.

Seek prompt medical care for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, pus, difficulty opening the eye, or redness of the white of the eye. Get assessed sooner if symptoms begin after a new product or medicine. A rash beside the eye can be mild, while symptoms from the eye itself need a different level of care.

Ask whether the eyelid skin or the eye is involved, which cleanser and medicine are safe near the eyes, whether contact lenses or cosmetics should be paused, and what change should trigger same-day care.
