Perioral Dermatitis in Chinese Patients

The rash may appear as clustered bumps, redness, flaking, burning, or sensitivity around the mouth, nose, or eyelids. On some skin tones, redness may be subtle while brown, grey, or purple colour is more noticeable. It can be mistaken for acne or an allergy, so the distribution and recent product or medicine changes matter.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser. Stop scrubs, strong acids, essential oils, and newly introduced cosmetics while symptoms settle. Keep a record of facial creams, steroid products, inhalers, toothpaste, masks, and shaving products to discuss at the appointment. Depending on the examination, a clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics for acne, and will explain how to use them. Avoid borrowing medicines or applying steroid cream to the face without advice.

Arrange a review if the rash does not settle, repeatedly returns, or leaves persistent colour change. Seek prompt care for eye pain, blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, fever, pus, or rapidly spreading redness. Those symptoms require examination rather than cosmetic treatment.
