Perioral Dermatitis on the Chin: Treatment Guide

Perioral dermatitis on the chin may appear as small bumps, redness, dry scale, burning, or skin sensitivity around the mouth. Saliva, lip products, shaving, mask contact, heavy creams, and repeated rubbing can irritate this area. The bumps may resemble acne, but blackheads and whiteheads are not typical features of perioral dermatitis. A clinician checks the distribution and surface of the skin, asks about products and steroid use, and considers other causes before choosing treatment.

Use a gentle cleanser, rinse with lukewarm water, and pat the chin dry. Avoid picking, scrubbing, fragranced products, and trying several new treatments at once. Do not apply a facial corticosteroid unless it has been specifically prescribed with instructions, because stopping or changing it may need supervision. Depending on the examination, a dermatologist may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or an oral antibiotic, with the choice guided by severity, location, medical history, and other medicines.

Arrange an appointment if the chin rash persists, spreads around the mouth or nose, repeatedly returns, or leaves ongoing irritation. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, facial swelling, or eye symptoms. A rash that worsens after steroid use should also be reviewed rather than treated with more cream independently.
