Perioral Dermatitis Around the Eye: What to Know

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory facial rash that can cause small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, scaling, burning, or tightness. Although it often appears around the mouth, irritation can extend toward the nose and eye area. The delicate eyelid skin can also develop eczema, contact dermatitis, infection, or another eye-related condition, so location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. It is different from ordinary pimples, even when the bumps resemble them.

Pause new cosmetics, fragranced products, scrubs, and active skin treatments around the area. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, avoid rubbing, and keep products away from the eye itself. Do not start or stop a corticosteroid near the eye without clinician advice; these medicines can change facial rashes and require careful use. A dermatologist may consider a topical treatment or an oral medicine after examining the rash and checking what has already been used.

Arrange prompt medical care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Seek urgent assessment if the eye cannot open normally or the rash involves the eyeball. Even without these warning signs, book an appointment if the rash persists, repeatedly returns, or has followed steroid use.

Ask whether the rash is perioral dermatitis or another eyelid condition, which products should be stopped, whether any steroid needs tapering, and what symptoms would require eye review. Bring a list of creams, cleansers, cosmetics, and medicines used on the face.
