Perioral Dermatitis and Pregnancy

Hormonal and skin-barrier changes can make facial sensitivity more noticeable, but a rash around the mouth is not automatically perioral dermatitis. Small bumps, dry scale, burning, and sparing immediately next to the lips can help a clinician distinguish it from acne, eczema, or contact irritation. Pregnancy affects which topical and oral medicines are suitable, so do not rely on a previous prescription without checking.

Keep cleansing gentle, use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, and stop newly added cosmetics or active ingredients around the mouth. Avoid steroid creams unless the clinician overseeing your pregnancy specifically advises them; stopping a regularly used steroid also deserves guidance. Record products, symptoms, and pregnancy medicines for the appointment. Depending on the examination, the clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy; an oral antibiotic requires a separate pregnancy-specific review.

Contact your maternity or dermatology team if the rash is persistent, spreading, or affecting the eyes. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, fever, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe pain. Contact the prescriber promptly if you used a medicine that was not cleared for pregnancy, so the exposure and next steps can be reviewed accurately.
