Perioral Dermatitis in African American Skin

The rash often clusters around the mouth but can extend beside the nose or around the eyes. In richly pigmented skin, redness may be less obvious, while darker marks can remain after the active irritation settles. The bumps can resemble acne, but the pattern, dryness, burning, and sensitivity can point toward perioral dermatitis rather than ordinary pimples. A clinician may also consider contact irritation, eczema, or infection.

Use a gentle cleanser and a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser. Pause new cosmetics, scrubs, heavy occlusive creams, and fragranced products around the mouth. Do not start or stop a steroid cream on your own; topical corticosteroids can sometimes worsen or prolong this condition, and sudden changes after regular use should be supervised. A dermatologist may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or, when appropriate, an oral antibiotic. Avoid picking, because inflammation can leave longer-lasting dark marks.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash persists, spreads toward the eyes, repeatedly returns, or leaves changing pigmentation. Seek prompt care for eye pain, marked eyelid swelling, vision changes, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening tenderness. Bring the products and medicines used on your face, including steroid creams and cosmetic lightening products.
