The implant releases etonogestrel, a progestogen that can alter ovulation and the womb lining. Some people have occasional bleeding, some have longer or more frequent episodes, and some have no bleeding. A pattern can change even after the first year; bleeding by itself does not show that the implant has stopped working.

Pregnancy is uncommon with correct use, but no contraceptive method removes every possibility. Medicines or supplements can also affect the implant, so mention everything you take at review.

Track dates, flow, pain, and any missed or late replacement appointment. Check the implant is still in place if you have been shown how to do so, and use the service that fitted it if you cannot feel it. A clinician can discuss treatment for troublesome bleeding or whether another method, such as a Hormonal Coil, fits your needs.

Arrange prompt assessment for very heavy bleeding, significant lower-abdominal pain, fever, unusual discharge, or a positive pregnancy test. Seek emergency help for severe one-sided pain, faintness, or shoulder-tip pain with possible pregnancy. Contact the implant service if the rod cannot be felt, appears to have moved, or the insertion site becomes painful, red, or swollen.

Ask whether your bleeding pattern is consistent with the implant, whether a pregnancy test or examination is needed, and what options can reduce disruption. Confirm the replacement date, discuss medicine interactions, and ask how removal or an alternative method would affect your contraception plan.
