What should you know about perianal laser hair removal?

The device targets pigment in the hair follicle, so it works best when there is a contrast between hair and surrounding skin. A clinician chooses a suitable laser and settings after examining the area. Alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG systems have different operating characteristics; the choice depends on skin tone, hair features and safety considerations.

The area may feel warm or briefly prickly during pulses. Redness or mild swelling around follicles can occur afterwards. Hair sheds gradually rather than disappearing during the appointment, and regrowth can become finer or less dense over a course of treatments. Laser does not treat an active rash, open wound or infection.

Tell the clinician about recent tanning, medicines that affect light sensitivity, genital skin conditions and any history of unusual scarring. Follow the clinic's instructions about trimming and washing; do not wax or pluck hairs immediately before a session because the follicle is the target. Keep the area clean, reduce friction afterwards and avoid applying irritating products until the skin settles.

If shaving causes bumps, discuss whether laser is appropriate after the skin has recovered. Persistent nodules, draining areas or recurring inflammation may need assessment for a condition such as hidradenitis suppurativa rather than cosmetic treatment alone.

Contact the treating clinic if blistering, marked swelling, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness or a wound develops. Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, rapidly worsening skin changes, fever or difficulty passing urine. Do not continue sessions over skin that is broken, infected or actively inflamed.

Ask which laser is being considered, how the perianal skin will be protected, whether a patch test is advised, how many visits may be needed, and what symptoms should prompt a call. Also ask how hair removal might affect existing ingrown hairs or irritation.
