What should you know about perianal itching?

The skin may itch after frequent wiping, sweating, diarrhoea, constipation, or exposure to fragranced wipes, soaps, creams, or laundry products. Contact Dermatitis can produce burning, redness, or soreness where a product touches. Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or Lichen Planus may affect sensitive skin folds and need different treatment.

A Skin Yeast Infection may cause a moist, intensely irritated rash, while Scabies can cause marked itching elsewhere and often disturbs sleep. Hives tend to come and go as raised itchy areas. Because these conditions overlap in appearance, the distribution, duration, bowel symptoms, medications, and products used are useful clues.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry rather than rubbing, and wear loose breathable underwear. Stop fragranced wipes, deodorants, and new products on the area. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin and invite infection. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or anaesthetic creams repeatedly without advice, because the wrong product can mask the appearance or irritate delicate skin. A clinician can select treatment after examining the area.

Book an appointment if itching persists, keeps returning, prevents sleep, or comes with bleeding, discharge, pain, cracks, sores, a lump, or a change in bowel habits. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, or rapidly worsening swelling.
