What should you know about peri optical cellulitis?

Cellulitis around the eye may follow a skin break, insect bite, local infection, or spread from nearby tissues. Redness and swelling can involve an eyelid or the skin surrounding the eye. The distinction between infection in front of the eye socket and a deeper infection cannot be made safely from a photograph or home examination.

A clinician will ask about fever, pain, vision, eye movement, and how quickly the swelling developed. Fever and painful skin can accompany cellulitis, while pain with eye movement, reduced vision, double vision, or a bulging eye are especially concerning signs of deeper involvement.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for new redness, warmth, swelling, or tenderness around the eye. Do not squeeze the area, apply non-prescribed creams close to the eye, or delay care to see whether it fades. Tell the clinician about recent injuries, sinus symptoms, bites, skin infections, contact lenses, medicines, and Type 2 Diabetes. Use prescribed treatment exactly as instructed.

Go to emergency care immediately for vision change, double vision, difficulty moving the eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe pain. Fever with marked weakness, faintness, or difficulty breathing can indicate a serious spreading infection such as Sepsis. These symptoms need urgent evaluation even if the skin redness seems limited.
