What should you know about peri natal depression?

Short answer
Peri natal depression is a treatable mood condition during pregnancy or after birth that deserves prompt, compassionate support.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it may feel
A person with peri natal depression may feel persistently low, empty, hopeless, numb or unusually guilty. Enjoyment and connection can become difficult, and concentration, appetite or energy may change. Sleep can be disturbed by depression as well as by caring for a baby; Insomnia and Difficulty Sleeping may overlap but do not explain every mood change. Feeling anxious, Irritability and Fatigue can occur alongside depression. These experiences are medical symptoms, not a failure of parenting, and they can affect any parent.
Steps toward help
Tell a midwife, obstetric clinician, GP or mental-health professional what has changed and how long it has lasted. Mention thoughts, sleep, medicines, previous mental-health difficulties and practical support at home. Treatment may include talking therapy, social support, medication chosen with pregnancy or breastfeeding in mind, or a combination. Ask someone trusted to help with meals, appointments and baby care while you recover. A clinician can also check physical contributors and distinguish depression from expected short-lived emotional changes after birth.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help if you have thoughts of harming yourself or the baby, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, or become severely confused, agitated or unusually energised with little need for sleep. Do not remain alone in an immediate crisis; contact emergency services or go to an emergency department. Promptly contact your care team for worsening mood, inability to manage essential activities, or severe anxiety.
Questions to take along
Ask which treatment options fit pregnancy or breastfeeding, how quickly support can begin, and who to contact outside appointments. Ask how sleep loss, medication effects and symptoms such as Daytime Sleepiness or Difficulty Concentrating will be monitored.

Questions people ask
Is peri natal depression the same as feeling low after birth?
Short-lived emotional changes can happen after birth, but persistent or impairing symptoms need a clinical assessment for depression.
Can treatment be used while breastfeeding?
Some treatments can be considered during breastfeeding. A clinician should weigh benefits and risks for you and the baby before prescribing.
