What should you know about perforin flow cytometry?

Perforin is stored in small compartments inside natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells. These cells use it to help damage infected or abnormal cells. Flow cytometry labels cells and their contents with laboratory markers, then measures the signal from perforin. A result can describe whether perforin is present and how much is detected in the tested cells. The finding is interpreted with symptoms, other immune tests, blood results and family history; it does not identify a cancer by itself.

The sample may be blood, or it may come from another specimen selected by the specialist. Follow the laboratory instructions about collection and medicines. Ask which cells are being tested, whether the laboratory needs a fresh sample, and when the report is expected. Results may be reviewed alongside genetic testing or a bone marrow biopsy when a broader immune or blood evaluation is needed. Keep a copy of the report and note any terms that need explanation.

Contact the clinical team promptly if you have a persistent fever, repeated unusual infections, worsening weakness, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or a new severe illness while the investigation is underway. Those symptoms need clinical assessment regardless of the perforin result. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, or bleeding that will not stop.

Which immune cells were measured? Does the result show a production problem, a release problem, or neither? What other tests will help interpret it? Could medicines, an active infection, or the sample timing affect the finding? What symptoms should prompt an urgent call?
