What should you know about penicillin for folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. It may appear as small red bumps, tender spots, pustules, or itch, and it can follow shaving, friction, sweating, occlusion, or an infection. A clinician considers the pattern, body site, recent products, hair-removal habits, and general health. Some bacterial cases need an antibiotic, but the choice depends on the suspected organism and severity; penicillin may not cover the relevant cause.
