What should you know about pembro lung cancer?

Pembrolizumab helps the immune system recognise and respond to some cancer cells. Its suitability depends on the lung cancer type, stage, previous treatment, general health and tumour findings. Genomic tumour profiling and other biomarker tests may identify options or show why a different approach is needed. Pembrolizumab may be given alone or with chemotherapy in a treatment plan selected by the oncology team.

Immune treatment can affect organs as well as tumours. Possible problems include inflammation involving the lungs, bowel, liver, thyroid or skin. Symptoms may appear during treatment or after a dose, so record new changes and report them rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Ask which test results support the plan, how the medicine will be given, and how often you will be reviewed. Tell the team about autoimmune disease, organ problems, transplant history, steroid use and all medicines or supplements. Keep a list of new symptoms, temperature readings if advised, and questions for each visit. Do not stop prescribed medicines or start supplements without checking.

Your wider plan might include radiotherapy, surgery such as lung lobectomy, chemotherapy or palliative care, depending on the disease and your goals. Treatment decisions can change when scans or symptoms change.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening cough, breathlessness, chest pain, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, severe rash, unusual weakness, confusion or a persistent headache. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, seizure or rapidly worsening hoarse voice. A hoarse voice has many causes, but a new or persistent change during treatment deserves review.

Ask what pembrolizumab is intended to do, whether biomarker or genomic results affect its use, and how response will be checked. Ask which symptoms require a same-day call, who to contact outside clinic hours, whether steroids or other medicines need adjustment, and how surgery, radiotherapy or supportive care fit your goals.
