Pelvic MRI with gel: what to expect

The gel creates a visible boundary around a body passage, helping the radiologist assess tissues next to it. The exact placement depends on the clinical question and the centre’s protocol. You may feel pressure, fullness, or mild embarrassment, but you can ask the staff to explain each step before it happens. Tell them about pain, bleeding, infection symptoms, allergies, or a recent procedure so the examination can be adapted when needed.

Follow the appointment instructions about bladder filling, bowel preparation, food, and medicines; these vary between centres. Wear comfortable clothing without metal and remove jewellery or other metal items. During positioning, communicate if the pressure is painful or if you need a pause. The scan requires you to remain still, and the technologist can use an intercom to hear you throughout it.

Mild temporary discomfort or a small amount of residual gel can occur. Seek medical advice for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, fainting, or unusual discharge after the examination. If you were given intravenous contrast as well, report breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, or severe dizziness urgently.

Ask where the gel will be placed, whether bladder or bowel preparation is needed, how discomfort will be managed, and whether an alternative protocol is suitable if insertion is painful.
