What does a pelvic MRI show?

The images can show the shape and position of structures such as the uterus, ovaries, bladder, bowel, pelvic floor, and bones. They may help describe cysts, fibroids, masses, fluid, inflammation, scarring, or changes after treatment, depending on the clinical question.

MRI pictures need clinical interpretation. A radiology report may recommend comparison with earlier imaging, another test, or follow-up. A described abnormality does not by itself establish what caused it or what treatment you need.

Tell the team about metal implants, metal fragments, pregnancy, kidney disease, allergies, and previous reactions to contrast. Follow the centre’s instructions about food, drink, medicines, and bladder preparation. Once the report is available, ask the requesting clinician to translate technical terms into a clear plan.

Write down the symptoms and timing that led to the scan. This context helps you discuss whether the findings fit your experience and whether more assessment is needed.

Get urgent medical help for severe or sudden pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever with marked illness, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms need assessment based on how you feel, regardless of when the MRI report is due.

Ask what the MRI was designed to investigate, which findings are relevant to your symptoms, whether comparison imaging is needed, and what follow-up should happen next.
