What a pelvic MRI can show

Depending on the reason for the scan, images may assess the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina, bladder, bowel, pelvic bones, muscles, and nearby soft tissues. MRI separates different tissue types clearly, which can help clinicians describe the size, position, and appearance of an area of concern.

A scan finding is not the same as a final diagnosis. The radiologist combines the images with your symptoms, examination, and previous tests, then sends a report to the clinician who requested the MRI.

Before the appointment, share relevant symptoms, previous imaging, operations, and medical devices. Afterward, ask the requesting clinician to explain unfamiliar terms and how the findings relate to your care. Keep the written report available when discussing next steps.

Some scans use contrast to make certain tissues or blood flow easier to assess. Ask whether contrast is planned and tell the team about kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Do not wait for an MRI report if you have severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever with feeling very unwell, or trouble passing urine. Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms; imaging follow-up should not delay care.

Ask which pelvic structures the scan is assessing, whether contrast is required, when the report will be ready, and what result would change your treatment or follow-up.
