What should you know about peeling thumb nails?

The nail plate is made of layers, so picking, biting, manicures, cleaning, or repeated contact with water can make the free edge split or lift. A single affected thumbnail may follow local injury, while changes in several nails can point to a broader nail or skin problem. Thickening, yellow or white colour change, debris under the nail, crumbling, or separation from the nail bed can occur with nail fungus. A photograph and examination help distinguish these possibilities.

Keep the nail trimmed short with a clean file and do not tear or peel the layers. Wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, dry hands carefully, and apply a plain hand or nail moisturiser after washing. Avoid aggressive buffing, artificial nails, and repeated polish removal until the nail is stronger. Protect the thumb from pressure and arrange an assessment if the change spreads, returns, or does not improve as the nail grows.

Seek care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, a dark mark after injury, or a nail that is lifting widely. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when several nails change or when the thumb is difficult to use.

Ask whether the pattern suggests trauma, irritation, or infection; whether a nail sample is needed; and which products or activities should be paused while the nail grows.
