What should you know about pediatric flu shot?

The vaccine trains immune defences before exposure to flu viruses. Protection is not immediate, and vaccination does not prevent every respiratory infection. A child may have a sore arm, mild tiredness or a short-lived fever after the injection. These effects are generally manageable, but tell the clinician about previous vaccine reactions, allergies or a current illness.

Bring the child’s health and vaccination information and mention medicines or immune conditions. Dress them in clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm. Encourage normal fluids and quiet activity afterwards, and follow the clinician’s advice about symptom relief. Do not give a medicine solely to prevent a reaction unless a healthcare professional recommends it. Keep the appointment record so future doses can be planned.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting or unusual weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician if fever persists, the injection site becomes increasingly painful or swollen, or your child seems significantly unwell. A child with breathing difficulty or reduced responsiveness needs emergency assessment.
