Preparing a child for an abdominal ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound uses a handheld probe and sound waves to create images of organs and nearby structures. It does not use ionising radiation. The sonographer applies gel to the child’s skin and moves the probe across the abdomen; gentle pressure may be needed for clear views. The appointment may be used to investigate pain, vomiting, abnormal blood tests, or concerns involving the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, or bowel region. Read the appointment instructions carefully because some scans require fasting while others allow clear fluids or ask for a comfortably full bladder. Never change a child’s regular medicine plan or restrict fluids beyond the centre’s instructions; call ahead if the child has diabetes, needs medicine with food, is very young, or cannot fast safely. Dress them in loose clothing and bring a familiar toy, comforter, or distraction. Explain that the gel may feel cool and that the scan usually requires staying still for short periods. Arrive with the referral details and any previous reports requested.

Contact the imaging centre before the appointment if your child has eaten when fasting was requested, cannot keep fluids down, or has a medical condition that makes preparation difficult; staff can tell you whether to attend or reschedule. Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen or hard abdomen, fainting, or unusual drowsiness. An ultrasound appointment should not delay assessment when a child appears seriously unwell.
