What should you know about Pearlson manual therapy?

Short answer

Pearlson manual therapy is a hands-on treatment approach that should follow an assessment of your pain, movement and health history.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Approach
Hands-on care combined with assessment and movement work
Goal
Support comfortable movement and reduce muscle or joint restriction

What it may involve

A practitioner may use guided joint movements, soft-tissue work, stretching or pressure to improve comfort and mobility. The technique should be adapted to the body area, irritability of symptoms and your response during treatment. Manual therapy is commonly paired with exercises that help you keep any movement gains between visits. It can be considered for problems such as cervical spondylosis, myofascial pain syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction or whiplash, but the technique is not identical for every condition.

How to prepare

Describe where symptoms travel, what movements aggravate them and any numbness, weakness, recent injury, surgery or medical condition. Wear clothing that permits access to the area. During treatment, report sharp, spreading or unusual pain rather than pushing through it. Gentle home exercises may support recovery when prescribed; avoid copying forceful techniques from videos or asking someone untrained to manipulate your neck or spine.

When to get medical advice

Seek prompt medical assessment for new limb weakness, loss of coordination, significant numbness, severe pain after trauma, fever with a hot swollen joint, or changes in bladder or bowel control. Stop a session and seek advice if symptoms become markedly worse or new neurological symptoms appear. A clinician can decide whether manual therapy is suitable or whether another evaluation is needed.

Questions for your doctor or therapist

What finding makes manual therapy suitable for my symptoms? Which techniques will you use, and what should I feel during and after treatment? What exercises or activity changes should accompany it? Which symptoms mean I should stop and contact you?

Questions people ask

Is manual therapy suitable for everyone?

No. Suitability depends on your examination, symptoms, medical history and the technique proposed.

Will manual therapy replace exercise?

Usually it is used alongside exercises and activity guidance rather than as the only part of care.
