A stated turnaround window may begin when the sample is collected, when it reaches the laboratory or when the booking is accepted. It may describe when the report is expected, not when a clinician has reviewed what it means. Delays can occur if a sample needs checking, transport takes longer or the laboratory requests another specimen. The result still needs careful reading: detected, not detected and inconclusive have different implications. Rapid processing does not make PCR interchangeable with a Rapid Antigen Test Kit, which uses a different method.

Before the appointment, ask the provider when the clock starts, how the report will arrive and whom to contact if it is late. Keep your phone and email accessible, check the secure portal and retain the full report.
