PCOS and bleeding after sex

Friction, dryness, a small tear, inflammation or infection can cause bleeding after sex. Bleeding may also arise from the cervix or, less often, from more serious changes that require examination. PCOS may affect periods, but it does not explain every episode of post-sex bleeding.

A clinician will consider age, pregnancy possibility, cervical screening history, contraception, menopause symptoms, pain, discharge and the amount of blood. Depending on the findings, they may examine the area or arrange testing.

Arrange a medical review if the bleeding happens again, follows a long gap, or comes with pain or discharge. Note when it starts, how long it lasts, whether penetration was painful, and whether blood also appears at other times. Avoid douching and mention any risk of a sexually transmitted infection.

A lubricant may reduce friction when dryness is suspected, but improvement does not remove the need for review if bleeding recurs. Keep screening appointments and bring any previous results to the clinician.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also needed when bleeding is accompanied by foul-smelling discharge or significant tenderness.
