PCL injury and knee swelling

Short answer
Swelling after a PCL injury reflects irritation or bleeding inside the knee and should be assessed with the injury mechanism and stability.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Swelling location
- Often felt around or within the knee joint
- What it shows
- Joint irritation, not the PCL grade on its own
Why swelling happens
A blow, fall, or sudden force can stretch the PCL and irritate the joint lining. Fluid may collect inside the knee, making bending difficult and causing pressure or fullness. Swelling can also come from damage to cartilage, bone, or another ligament, so its presence does not identify the PCL grade by itself. The timing, speed, and persistence of swelling help a clinician decide what needs checking.
How to care for the knee
Rest from impact and avoid deep flexion while the knee is swollen. Elevate the leg when resting, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if it feels helpful, and follow advice about weight-bearing. Do not forcefully massage a newly swollen knee or test its looseness yourself. A clinician may suggest Knee Bracing, while Physiotherapy can restore motion and strength in stages.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical review when swelling follows a significant impact, keeps returning, or comes with giving way or limited movement. Seek urgent care if swelling becomes sudden and severe, the knee is deformed, pain is extreme, or the foot becomes numb, weak, cold, or unusually pale.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the fluid seems to be inside the joint, whether imaging is needed, how much weight to place through the leg, and which swelling changes should trigger a review.

Questions people ask
Is swelling alone proof of a PCL tear?
No. Several knee injuries and conditions can cause swelling, so examination is needed to identify the source.
Should I exercise while the knee is swollen?
Avoid impact and painful loading; gentle movement may be suitable when guided by a clinician or physiotherapist.
