Short answer

Paula's Choice oily-skin products may reduce surface shine, but balanced cleansing, moisturising, and assessment of related conditions matter more than stripping the skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why skin looks oily

Oily skin reflects increased sebum on the surface. Genetics, hormones, heat, stress, and some products can influence it. Excess oil can accompany acne, including hormonal acne, but oily skin itself does not establish either diagnosis. Greasy scale, itch, or redness around the nose, eyebrows, ears, or scalp may point toward seborrheic dermatitis instead. A routine should address comfort and the skin barrier as well as shine.

Building a manageable routine

Cleanse gently, avoid harsh scrubbing, and choose a light non-comedogenic moisturiser. Ingredients such as salicylic acid or niacinamide may suit some people, but introduce one active at a time and stop if irritation develops. Blotting papers can reduce shine without repeated washing. Keep hair products away from the face and remove makeup before sleep. If breakouts are persistent, a dermatologist can discuss prescription options, including isotretinoin treatment for selected severe or resistant acne after a full safety review.

When to seek care

Seek assessment for painful deep spots, scarring, sudden oiliness with other hormonal changes, or greasy itchy scale that does not settle. Medical advice is also appropriate when over-the-counter care causes peeling or burning, or when acne affects confidence and daily life. Treatment depends on whether the main issue is oil, clogged pores, inflammation, or dermatitis.

Questions for your doctor

Is my oiliness accompanied by acne or seborrheic dermatitis? Which active ingredient fits my skin? Could hormones be contributing? Would prescription treatment be appropriate, and what monitoring would it require?

Questions people ask

Should oily skin be left without moisturiser?

No. A lightweight non-comedogenic moisturiser can support the barrier without necessarily increasing oiliness.

Does oily skin mean I have acne?

No. Oily skin can occur without acne, although excess sebum may contribute to clogged pores in some people.
