Pathophysiology of a TIA

Short answer
A transient ischaemic attack happens when blood flow to part of the brain is briefly interrupted, causing neurological symptoms without lasting tissue injury on assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main mechanism
- Temporary reduction of blood flow to brain tissue
- Key message
- Symptoms need urgent assessment even after they stop
What happens during a TIA
Brain cells need a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose delivered by blood. During a TIA, a small clot or another temporary change in a blood vessel reduces flow to a brain region. Symptoms can include facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, vision loss, dizziness, or difficulty walking.
The blockage clears or blood flow improves, so symptoms resolve. A TIA is still a warning that a stroke could occur, and the underlying cause may involve the heart, neck arteries, blood pressure, diabetes, or blood clotting. The scope of this page concerns TIA physiology; new symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
What to do after symptoms
If symptoms are happening now or have recently stopped, seek emergency medical help rather than driving yourself. Clinicians may check brain imaging, blood vessels, heart rhythm, and risk factors. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medication or procedures. A plan could involve Targeted Therapy or Immunotherapy only when a separate cancer diagnosis makes those treatments relevant; they are not standard treatments for a TIA itself.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately for sudden weakness, facial asymmetry, speech difficulty, vision change, loss of balance, or confusion, even if the symptom improves. Record when the person was last known to be well and describe which symptoms appeared first. Rapid assessment helps distinguish a TIA from an active stroke and identify preventable causes.
Questions for your doctor
What cause of reduced blood flow is suspected? Which tests will check the heart and neck arteries? What warning symptoms require an emergency call? Which medicines, health conditions, or lifestyle factors need review?
Questions people ask
Is a TIA the same as a stroke?
Both involve interrupted brain blood flow, but TIA symptoms resolve and do not leave lasting tissue injury on assessment.
Why seek help if symptoms have gone?
A TIA can signal a treatable source of clot or vessel narrowing and a risk of a future stroke.
