What should you know about partial knee replacement revision surgery?

A partial knee replacement resurfaces one compartment while preserving other parts of the joint. Revision may involve replacing a component, converting to a total knee replacement, or addressing another cause of symptoms. The reason must be established before surgery: examination and imaging may assess implant position, bone, alignment, ligament stability, and the other knee compartments. Infection is also considered when pain, swelling, warmth, drainage, or a sudden change in function is present. The implant may use materials such as cobalt-chrome alloy and highly cross-linked polyethylene, depending on the design and surgical plan.

Keep a record of pain, swelling, instability, locking, walking tolerance, and any change after an injury. Your orthopaedic team may request X-rays, blood tests, or other investigations before deciding whether revision is appropriate. Before surgery, review medicines, dental or skin infections, smoking, nutrition, and home support with the team. Afterward, recovery typically includes wound care, swelling control, early movement, walking practice, and physiotherapy. Follow weight-bearing and exercise instructions closely; increasing activity too quickly can irritate healing tissues.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, calf swelling, or a sudden loss of knee function. Emergency help is needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, or fainting. After revision, a new inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed knee, or rapidly increasing swelling also needs urgent assessment. These symptoms can have several causes and should not be self-diagnosed.
