Paroxysmal cough sound: what it can tell you

The sound alone cannot identify one condition. A barking, wheezing, rattling or whooping quality can reflect different airway problems, and the timing matters: note whether it began after a cold, follows exercise, is worse at night, comes with heartburn or produces mucus. A cough that continues for weeks needs assessment because ongoing irritation, asthma, reflux, allergic rhinitis, bronchiectasis or another cause may be involved.

Write down when attacks occur and record the sound only if doing so does not delay care. Sip fluids, rest your voice, avoid tobacco smoke and use any prescribed inhaler exactly as directed. Do not start antibiotics or cough medicines from someone else’s prescription. A clinician may listen to your chest and choose tests based on breathing, duration, age and associated symptoms.

Get emergency help if the cough is accompanied by severe breathlessness, blue lips, choking, confusion, fainting, chest pain or inability to speak in full sentences. Children who are struggling to breathe, pulling in at the ribs, unusually sleepy or unable to drink need urgent assessment. Arrange a medical review for a cough that keeps returning, disrupts sleep or does not settle.

Ask what features of the sound point toward an airway, nasal or reflux cause, whether your breathing should be tested, and which changes would require urgent help. Tell the clinician about allergies, wheeze, heartburn, medicines, smoking exposure and recent infections.
