What should you know about parotid melanoma?

The parotid glands sit in front of and below the ears. Melanoma in this region may be a skin melanoma near the face that has reached nearby lymph nodes, or melanoma identified within tissue around the gland. The exact meaning depends on examination, imaging, and tissue analysis. A lump near the jaw or ear is not enough by itself to establish melanoma; many conditions can cause swelling in this area. The care team will review the original skin lesion, lymph-node findings, margins, and whether disease is present elsewhere.

Prompt referral to a dermatology, head-and-neck, or oncology team helps coordinate diagnosis and staging. Testing may include examination of the skin and lymph-node basin, imaging when indicated, and a biopsy or surgical removal of suspicious tissue. Depending on the findings, discussions may include sentinel lymph node biopsy, skin cancer surgery, tumour removal surgery, or immunotherapy. Treatment is individualised around the location, stage, previous procedures, general health, and the function of nearby facial structures.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new or changing pigmented lesion, a growing lump near the ear or jaw, persistent bleeding or crusting, or a firm node that does not settle. Seek urgent help for facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, severe headache, confusion, seizures, or sudden vision changes. These symptoms have several possible causes, but they need timely clinical evaluation.

Ask where the melanoma began, what the pathology shows, whether lymph nodes or other sites are involved, and which scans are needed. Discuss the purpose and risks of each operation, nerve-related effects near the parotid, immunotherapy options, and the schedule for follow-up after cancer treatment.
