What should you know about parenting ADHD?

Short answer
Parenting a child with ADHD works best with consistent routines, brief clear instructions, positive reinforcement and professional assessment of attention, activity and impulse-control difficulties.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the pattern
ADHD can affect concentration, activity level, impulse control and the ability to shift between tasks. A child may understand a rule yet struggle to apply it when distracted, tired or emotionally overwhelmed. Irritability or feeling anxious can occur alongside attention difficulties, but these symptoms can have other explanations. Assessment considers the child’s development, behaviour in more than one setting, learning, sleep, mood and family context; a single difficult behaviour does not establish ADHD.
Practical parenting tools
Use a predictable morning and bedtime sequence, displayed with simple words or pictures. Give one instruction at a time, ask the child to repeat it, and divide homework into short work periods with planned movement breaks. Notice and name the behaviour you want repeated, such as starting promptly or putting items away. Agree on a few safety rules and use calm, immediate consequences. Share observations with school and arrange a mental health assessment when difficulties impair learning, friendships or family life.
When to seek care
Seek prompt professional help if a child talks about self-harm, feels unsafe, becomes suddenly confused, has severe aggression, or cannot be kept safe from dangerous impulsive acts. Arrange an assessment when concentration problems or disruptive behaviour are persistent across settings, or when anxiety, irritability, sleep problems or learning difficulties are worsening. Bring examples rather than labels: what happens, where, how often and what helps.
Questions for your doctor
What other conditions or stressors should be considered? What information should school provide? Which routines and behaviour strategies fit my child? Would a mental health assessment help? How should we review progress and safety?
