Paralysis from polio: what to know

How the structures involved in Poliomyelitis differ from normal

Short answer

Paralysis from polio is a serious nervous-system complication that can cause sudden weakness and needs urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
New weakness can involve movement, swallowing or breathing.
Immediate action
Seek emergency assessment for sudden or progressing weakness.

How polio can affect movement

Polio is a viral infection that can occasionally affect the nerves controlling muscles. Weakness may begin in one limb or several limbs, feel uneven from side to side, and progress over a short period. Muscles may become floppy rather than stiff. The throat and breathing muscles can also be affected, making swallowing, coughing or breathing difficult.

A diagnosis cannot be made from weakness alone. Doctors consider the pattern of symptoms, recent illness, vaccination history and possible exposure, then arrange urgent tests and monitoring. Other conditions can cause sudden weakness, so rapid assessment matters.

What to do

Treat new or worsening weakness as an emergency, especially when it follows fever, headache, vomiting or muscle pain. Do not ask the person to walk unsupported if the legs are weak. Note when the weakness began, which areas are affected, and any trouble swallowing or breathing for the medical team.

Avoid close contact with others until clinicians advise you, and wash hands carefully after using the bathroom or helping with personal care. Discuss prevention through [Childhood Immunisation](/treatments/preventive-care-and-vaccination/childhood-immunisation/), including whether any household member has missed recommended doses.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services for sudden weakness, inability to stand, choking, difficulty swallowing, weak cough, breathlessness or unusual sleepiness. Breathing can deteriorate when the muscles between the ribs or the diaphragm are affected. Do not wait for a fever or pain to return before seeking help.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests are needed, how breathing and swallowing will be monitored, whether infection-control precautions apply, what rehabilitation support may be needed, and whether family members require vaccination review or medical advice.

Questions people ask

Is every case of weakness caused by polio?

No. Weakness has many possible causes, but sudden or progressing weakness needs urgent assessment regardless of the cause.

Can polio paralysis affect breathing?

Yes. Nerves supplying breathing muscles can be affected, so breathlessness or a weak cough is an emergency sign.
