What treatment addresses

Parainfluenza viruses are a common cause of [Croup](/conditions/croup/), an infection that swells the voice box and upper windpipe. This can produce a barking cough, hoarse voice and a harsh, high-pitched noise when breathing in. A [Cough](/symptoms/cough/) may be worse at night. Fever can occur, and [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) symptoms may come first.

A clinician judges severity by watching the child's breathing, voice, colour, alertness and ability to drink. Mild illness may need calm observation and fluids. Supporting your child
