What should you know about pancake coil copper tube?

A copper coil, also called a copper IUD, is a small device placed in the womb. Copper changes the local environment so sperm movement and fertilisation are disrupted. It does not contain hormones. The device has threads that extend through the cervix, allowing a clinician to check its position and remove it when needed.

People may notice stronger or longer periods, or more cramping, particularly after fitting. A hormonal coil is a different option: it releases a hormone in the womb and may make periods lighter for some people. Neither device protects against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms may still be relevant.

Discuss your periods, pregnancy plans, pelvic infections, unexplained bleeding and previous womb or cervical procedures with the clinician. Fitting is performed through the vagina and cervix, and cramping can occur. Afterward, learn how to check the threads if advised and attend follow-up if arranged. Seek advice if you cannot feel the threads, feel hard plastic at the cervix, or think the device has moved.

Get urgent medical advice for severe or worsening lower abdominal pain, fever, unusual offensive discharge, very heavy bleeding, dizziness, or a positive pregnancy test while the coil is in place. These symptoms need assessment for infection, displacement or pregnancy-related complications. Sudden pain after fitting should not be dismissed as ordinary cramping.

Ask which device is being offered, how it prevents pregnancy, what period changes to expect, how long it can remain in place, and how removal works. Ask which symptoms are expected after fitting and which require same-day care.
