Short answer

Diverticular disease involves small pouches in the colon, with symptoms ranging from none to pain or bowel changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
Diverticula form in the wall of the colon, often without symptoms.
Flare feature
Inflammation may cause persistent abdominal pain, tenderness and fever.
Urgent warning
Severe pain, vomiting, faintness or ongoing bleeding needs prompt assessment.

What diverticular disease means

Diverticula are small bulges that form through weaker areas of the colon wall. Their presence is called diverticulosis. Some people have no symptoms; others notice lower abdominal discomfort, bloating or altered bowel habits. When a pouch becomes inflamed, diverticulitis can cause more persistent pain, tenderness and fever. Bleeding or a change in bowel habit has several possible causes and should be assessed rather than attributed automatically to diverticular disease.

Managing symptoms

Keep a record of pain, bowel movements, food patterns and any bleeding to discuss at an appointment. If constipation is present, gradual fibre changes, adequate fluids and regular movement may help, but increase fibre cautiously if pain is active. Do not start laxatives, anti-inflammatory medicines or antibiotics for a flare without advice. A clinician may tailor dietary guidance and decide whether tests are needed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, persistent vomiting, fever with significant pain, inability to pass stool or gas, faintness, or heavy or ongoing rectal bleeding. Arrange a GP consultation for recurrent discomfort, new constipation, diarrhoea, weight change or symptoms that do not settle. Assessment helps distinguish uncomplicated disease from inflammation or another bowel condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest diverticulosis or diverticulitis, how to adjust fibre safely, which pain medicines are suitable, and whether you need blood tests, imaging or bowel examination. Nutrition counselling may help if food choices are difficult or symptoms recur.

Questions people ask

Does diverticular disease always cause pain?

No. Diverticula may cause no symptoms, while symptomatic disease can produce discomfort or bowel changes.

Should fibre be increased during severe pain?

Ask a clinician first. Dietary changes may need to be adjusted during an active flare or when a blockage is a concern.
