Pale cloudy urine in women

Cloudiness can occur when urine contains mucus, salts, cells, or discharge from the vagina. Dehydration often makes urine darker, but urine appearance alone is not a reliable way to identify the cause. A urinary tract infection may present with burning, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong-smelling urine. Kidney infection can add fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Pregnancy, recent sex, menstruation, and some supplements can also affect what you see in the toilet.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the change clears after passing urine again. Collect a clean midstream sample if a clinician asks for testing; avoid using a sample mixed with menstrual blood or vaginal products. Arrange an appointment for persistent cloudiness, burning, urgency, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or recurrent episodes. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because testing can guide the right treatment.

Seek same-day medical advice for cloudy urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, marked weakness, or feeling faint, as these can accompany a kidney infection or significant dehydration. Seek urgent help for confusion, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or severe pain. If pregnant, contact a maternity or primary-care service promptly when urinary symptoms appear.

Ask whether you need a urine dipstick or culture, whether discharge could be contributing, how to reduce repeat infections, and which symptoms require urgent review. Tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, periods, sexual activity, medicines, fever, pain, and fluid intake.
