Painless Cyst Under the Skin: What to Know

An epidermoid cyst can develop when skin cells collect in a small sac beneath the surface. It may feel smooth, round, and mobile, and sometimes has a tiny central opening. A cyst can remain quiet for a long time, then become sore, red, warm, or swollen if it ruptures or becomes inflamed. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly massage the lump; these actions can irritate it and introduce infection. Keep the area clean and note its size, tenderness, colour, and any drainage. Arrange an assessment if the lump grows, becomes fixed, changes colour, bleeds, drains, or interferes with movement.
