What should you know about a painful skin tag in the armpit?

A true skin tag is usually a soft piece of tissue that can become sore when clothing, skin folds, deodorant, or shaving rubs against it. Pain can also mean the growth has twisted and its blood supply is being compressed. A tender lump beneath the surface may instead be a boil or abscess. Repeated painful nodules in the armpits can occur with Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Cellulitis may cause spreading warmth and redness rather than a single hanging tag.

A photograph cannot reliably identify a growth. A clinician may check its attachment, colour, firmness, and nearby lymph nodes before discussing removal or another treatment.

Wash gently, pat dry, and reduce rubbing with loose clothing. Pause shaving and fragranced deodorant over the area until it settles. Do not tie thread around the growth, cut it off, or apply wart medicine; these actions can cause bleeding, infection, or a misleading change in appearance. A cool compress may ease irritation. If a clinician confirms a skin tag, removal can be discussed when friction keeps causing symptoms.

Book prompt medical review for rapid enlargement, persistent pain, bleeding without rubbing, ulceration, a firm fixed lump, or a change in colour. Seek urgent care if redness is spreading, the armpit is very swollen, pus is present, or fever and illness develop. Emergency help is needed for severe allergic swelling or breathing trouble.

Ask whether the lesion looks like a skin tag, whether it should be removed or tested, and which deodorants or hair-removal methods are least irritating. Mention any recurrent armpit lumps or drainage.
