Painful scalp pimples: causes and care

Sweat, oil, friction from hats or helmets, and residue from styling products can block or irritate follicles. Folliculitis may cause tender red bumps or pustules around hairs. Acne may occur along the hairline or scalp, while a deeper lump can have a different cause. Itching, flaking, crusting, hair loss, or repeated lesions gives a clinician useful clues. Do not assume every scalp bump is acne, particularly when it is spreading or leaves sore areas.

Wash after heavy sweating and use a gentle shampoo. Rinse styling products thoroughly, avoid tight headwear when possible, and pause oily pomades or fragranced products until the scalp settles.
