Painful lump on the side of the neck

Lymph nodes along the side of the neck can become tender as the body responds to a sore throat, dental problem, ear infection, or skin inflammation. A cyst or inflamed follicle can also form a local lump. Examination considers whether it moves, whether the skin is changed, and whether there are mouth, throat, voice, or thyroid symptoms. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, and other conditions are less common possibilities that cannot be diagnosed by touch alone.

Record when you first noticed the lump and any recent infection, dental treatment, vaccination, or injury. Avoid squeezing it or applying harsh products. A warm compress can ease surface discomfort. Book a medical assessment if it remains, enlarges, becomes hard or fixed, or returns after improving. The clinician may examine the mouth, throat, ears, skin, and thyroid, then consider imaging or a tissue sample when indicated.

Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, spreads quickly, causes severe pain, produces pus, or comes with high fever or confusion. Seek timely review for persistent hoarseness, trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a firm lump that does not recede.
