Painful dry cracked heels: treatment and care

Short answer
Painful dry cracked heels need regular moisturising, gentle skin care, protection from friction and medical review when cracks are deep or show infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What splits
- Thick, inflexible skin at the heel rim
- Supportive habit
- Moisturise after washing and wear cotton socks
- Get assessed
- For infection signs, deep cracks or risk conditions
Why dry heels split
The heel carries pressure with each step. When its outer skin becomes dry and thick, it can lose stretch and split at the rim. This may cause tenderness, stinging or bleeding. Sandals, prolonged standing, hot washing and repeated rubbing can maintain the cycle. Peeling elsewhere on the foot may suggest Athlete's Foot, while general dryness is covered under Dry Skin.
Daily care
Clean feet gently and dry carefully, especially around the toes. Apply a rich emollient to the heel while the skin is slightly damp, then use cotton socks overnight. Wear shoes with a secure heel and enough room; avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces while the fissure is open. Do not cut thick skin or use strong exfoliants on painful splits. If self-care is not enough, a clinician can tailor emollient therapy and check for an underlying cause.
Warning signs
Seek medical advice for deep cracks, bleeding that recurs, increasing pain or failure to improve. Redness spreading beyond the fissure, warmth, swelling, discharge, fever or red streaks can indicate infection and need prompt attention. Arrange early assessment if you have diabetes, numbness or circulation problems, because foot injuries may be harder to notice and heal.
Useful questions
Is the dryness alone causing these fissures, or could there be fungal or inflammatory disease? Which product should I use and how often? What footwear changes would protect the heel while it closes?

Questions people ask
Is soaking my feet helpful?
A brief lukewarm wash can be comfortable, but prolonged soaking may leave fragile skin more vulnerable; moisturise soon after drying.
Can cracked heels heal without treatment?
Mild fissures may settle with consistent protection and moisturising, while painful, deep or recurrent cracks need professional advice.
