Pain under my breastbone

A bruise-like ache that is reproducible with touch or movement may involve the muscles, ribs, or cartilage. Pain related to meals, a sour taste, or lying flat may be digestive. Breast tissue can feel tender during hormonal changes, while infection may cause warmth, redness, swelling, or fever. Pain with breathing may involve the chest lining or lungs. These clues are useful, but they cannot replace an examination.

Keep a brief symptom record including meals, activity, menstrual timing, breathing, and pressure on the area. Rest the chest from provoking movements and use comfortable support if breast motion is uncomfortable. Seek an appointment if the symptom continues, becomes more focused, or affects sleep or daily activity. Bring a list of medicines and describe any breast or digestive changes.

Seek emergency care for crushing or severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, sudden confusion, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek same-day advice for fever with a hot red breast, rapidly increasing swelling, persistent vomiting, or pain after a chest injury. A new symptom can need assessment even when the skin looks normal.

Ask what examination is needed, whether the pain follows the chest wall or breast, how reflux or hormonal changes might fit, and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
