Pain under the left breastbone

Pain that is sore to touch or follows lifting, coughing, or an awkward movement can reflect muscles, ribs, or the joints between them. Breast pain may be linked with hormonal changes or local inflammation and is often felt in the breast rather than deep behind the bone. Burning after food can occur with reflux. Heart or lung causes can produce pressure, breathlessness, dizziness, or pain that travels beyond the chest. A left-sided location does not by itself identify the cause.

Write down the start time, exact spot, quality, and triggers. Note whether pressing the area, moving the shoulder, breathing deeply, eating, or lying down changes it. Avoid strenuous activity until the cause is clearer. A clinician can assess the chest, breasts, abdomen, and circulation and decide whether further testing is needed. Persistent or recurrent focal breast pain should be reviewed even when it is mild.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or tightness with breathlessness, faintness, nausea, unusual sweating, or pain extending to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Get prompt care for coughing blood, sudden breathing difficulty, fever with breast redness, or pain after significant trauma. Do not use the absence of a breast lump to rule out a chest or breast problem.

Ask whether the tenderness fits the chest wall or breast; which heart, lung, or digestive symptoms matter; whether medicines or hormonal timing could contribute; and what follow-up is appropriate if the pain returns.
