Pain under the breastbone above the stomach

The breastbone sits between the breasts, while the upper stomach lies beneath the ribs. Tenderness that changes when you press, twist, lift, or take a deep breath can fit a chest-wall source. Burning after meals, a sour taste, belching, or discomfort when lying down can point toward reflux. A problem in breast tissue may feel closer to one breast and may come with swelling, warmth, skin change, or nipple discharge. Location alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice when the pain began, whether it is on one side or central, and whether movement, food, breathing, or touch changes it. Rest from activities that strain the chest and wear a supportive bra if breast movement worsens the discomfort. Smaller meals and staying upright after eating may help reflux-type symptoms. Arrange a clinical assessment if pain persists, returns, or is accompanied by a breast change; a clinician may examine the breasts, chest wall, abdomen, and heart and lungs.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, cold sweating, sudden weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek prompt medical care for fever with breast redness or swelling, a rapidly enlarging tender area, repeated vomiting, black stools, or pain after an injury. These warning signs need assessment even if the discomfort feels near the breast.

Ask which features make a chest-wall, breast, or digestive cause more likely; whether you need an examination or tests; what symptoms should prompt urgent review; and how to record links with meals, periods, movement, or exercise.
