Pain in the wrists and elbows: what to know

Short answer
Pain in the wrists and elbows can arise from overuse, irritated tendons, nerve pressure, joint changes, or injury, and the pattern guides assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible sources
- Tendons, joints, nerves, muscles, or injury
- Track
- Side, location, movement, swelling, and sensation
- Seek help for
- Deformity, major weakness, or changing hand colour
What the pattern may suggest
Pain in both areas can develop when repeated gripping, lifting, keyboard use, or sport loads the connected muscles and tendons. Tenderness on the outer elbow may fit Tennis Elbow, while inner-elbow pain may fit Golfer's Elbow. Elbow Osteoarthritis can cause stiffness and reduced movement, and Cubital Tunnel Syndrome can cause tingling or numbness toward the ring and little fingers. These are possible explanations, not conclusions from pain alone.
Tell a clinician whether one or both sides hurt, where symptoms began, and whether pain travels down the arm. Weakness, morning stiffness, swelling, clicking, or altered sensation can change the assessment.
What to do
Break up repetitive tasks and vary your grip, keyboard position, or lifting technique. Keep joints moving gently within comfort, but reduce heavy loading and forceful squeezing while symptoms are active. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can help after activity when swelling is present. A clinician may consider exercises, a brace, or treatments such as Shockwave Therapy or a PRP Injection in selected cases; suitability depends on the diagnosis and your health history.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if symptoms persist, affect sleep or hand function, or include recurring swelling or weakness. Seek prompt care after an injury causing deformity, severe swelling, loss of movement, or intense tenderness. Numbness that is persistent or worsening, a cold or discoloured hand, or sudden major weakness needs urgent assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms point to a tendon, joint, or nerve problem; whether imaging or nerve testing is needed; and which tasks should be modified. Ask how progress will be monitored before returning to heavier activity.

Questions people ask
Can nerve irritation cause elbow and wrist symptoms together?
Yes. Irritation around the elbow or along the arm can produce tingling, numbness, or weakness farther down the limb.
Should I stop all arm movement?
Usually, comfortable light movement is preferable to complete rest, while painful loading and repetitive force should be reduced.
