Stomach pain after ovulation: what to know

After an egg is released, nearby irritation or fluid can cause cramping that continues briefly. The discomfort may be low in the abdomen rather than in the stomach itself, and may feel dull, tight, or sharp. Constipation, trapped gas, a urinary infection, menstrual changes, endometriosis, or an ovarian cyst can produce a similar feeling. Endometriosis may cause pain that returns with the cycle. Ovarian cysts can cause pressure or pain and sometimes need urgent review if symptoms change suddenly. Pain alone cannot identify the cause.

Write down the date, location, severity, bowel and urinary changes, bleeding, discharge, and whether movement affects the pain. Gentle warmth, rest, fluids, and light activity may be comfortable. Use pain relief only when appropriate for you and according to the product instructions. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and seek advice about medicines. Book an appointment if symptoms last beyond your usual pattern, recur, or make daily activities difficult.

Get urgent care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or pain with a missed period or positive pregnancy test. These features can signal a problem that cannot be assessed safely at home.

Ask whether the pain fits your cycle, whether a pregnancy test, urine test, pelvic examination, or ultrasound is needed, and which changes should prompt urgent help. Share your usual cycle pattern and any prior pelvic conditions or procedures.
