Pain in right flank when breathing: what to know

Pain linked to a deep breath, cough, or movement can occur when the muscles between the ribs or the chest wall are irritated. A problem affecting the lining around the lung can also cause sharp pain with breathing. Kidney pain is usually deeper and may come with urine changes, nausea, fever, or chills, although pain patterns can overlap. Kidney Stones and Kidney Infection are possible urinary causes, while a Urinary Tract Infection may cause burning or frequent urination. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop strenuous activity and observe whether gentle movement or pressing the area reproduces the pain. Record cough, breathlessness, fever, injury, urinary symptoms, and how quickly the pain started. Do not ignore new pain that limits breathing. Seek same-day advice if it continues, is unexplained, or comes with a cough or fever. A clinician may need to examine the chest, abdomen, and back.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, sudden intense pain, or coughing blood. Seek urgent medical review for fever with breathing pain, worsening cough, rapid breathing, or pain after a chest injury. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for flank pain with repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, or visible blood in the urine.
